First, check out the trailer!

Godzilla-Resurgence

Go Go Godzilla!

“Godzilla” is an icon in Japan – so much so that one of the hotels actually put the beast on its roof – the hotel where my son Jeff stayed when we were there in July!

Hotel GRacery Kabuki-cho

The Hotel Gracery, located in Shinjuku’s Kabuki-Cho district, put the monster on top of the Hotel’s reception floor, and inside, you could get a closeup look at the beast, which Alex and I jumped at the chance to do:

A Wall Of Godzilla!

Also inside the lobby was an exhibit that had T-shirts, DVD of earlier films, and a wall that had posters of all 31 films, classic movie posters like these:

This fun “Godzilla” exhibit had me interested in seeing the new film, which opens July 25th in Japan…

I also had some other fun in Tokyo as well…

Willard 1971 film

“Tear him up!”

And with that command, Shocktober 2016 introduces you to “Willard”, who turns his band of ravenous rats on all of his enemies!

Even more shocking, the movie’s sequel “Ben” had a theme song sung by Michael Jackson, that was a love song to a rat – and was Oscar-nominated!

michael-jackson-ben_song

Time For The Wacky Animal Vengeance Horror Of “Willard!”

Let’s celebrate Halloween 2016 by looking at one of the great cult horror film of the early 70’s.

This 1971 film starred Bruce Davison and Ernest Borgnine, and was a surprise hit! Check out the classic trailer:

willard

“Willard” was based on the novel “The Ratman’s Notebooks”, and was a surprise box office hit in 1971! A young Bruce Davison stars as Willard, a shy boy who befriends a rat named Ben…

Bruce Davison rat movie Willard

Ernest Borgnine Bets Against “Ben!”

Ernest Borgnine co-stars in “Willard”, and as you can see, it doesn’t end well for him. According to Borgnine’s autobiography, they offered the legendary character Actor a choice of a higher salary or a percentage of the box office. Borgnine chose to take the money right away – probably costing him plenty, because the movie was a surprise hit!

willard `1971 horror film ernest borgnine

Michael Jackson’s Love Song To A Rat!

One of the most interesting aspects of the film is that the main rat, Ben, was the star of a sequel the very next year called “Ben” – and the theme song is sung by a young Michael Jackson…and it was nominated for best original song of 1972!

%22Ben%22 horror film

That’s right – “Ben” was oscar-nominated! And why not? After all, it’s not every movie that offers a loving tribute to a killer rat!

“Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I’ll never be alone
And you my friend will see
You’ve got a friend in me
(You’ve got a friend in me)”

Yes, you’ve got a friend in “Ben!”

If you need to know, “Ben” lost the best original song Oscar to “The Morning After” from “The Poseidon Adventure!”

BEN 1972 film

Thanks to Shout Factory, you will soon be able to enjoy both cult classics “Willard” and “Ben”, which are getting a much-deserved blu-ray release – so bite down on these campy cult classics, which led to a avalanche of “killer animal” films in the 1970’s!

pieces-movie-poster-1981

“Pieces” is certainly not a perfect film, but the blu-ray includes a bonus documentary about New York’s notorious 42nd street of the 70’s – see it here:

Shocktober Day #14 Is A “Locked Room” Of Slashing Giallo!

Your vice classic italian giallo

PUT THE BLOODY KNIFE DOWN. Time To Talk About Day #14 Of “Shocktober!”

It’s the fourteenth day of “Shocktober”, and time to slice and dice a new horror genre for you!

If you don’t know about the classic Italian “giallo” genre of film shockers, you are missing some of the most suspenseful thrillers ever committed to bloody celluloid!

Giallo Book

“Giallos” are Italy’s version of “pulp fiction” – lurid thrillers with plenty of sex and violence – but they are also some of the best mystery films ever made!

classic giallo films

Oh, they also have some of the wildest titles of all time: like “A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin” for one, and what about this subtle title?

strip-nude-for-your-killer-blu-ray

The genre of Italian “giallo” film has resulted in some cinematic classics such as “Suspiria” and “Four Flies On Dead Velvet” – and I will share more about those in a moment….but first, time to explore a few more classics of the genre – starting with this classic title:

your-vice-is-a-locked-room-and-only-i-have-the-key

“Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key!”

This cult classic is loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale “The Black Cat”, and is from director Sergio Martino – who also made the classic thriller “Torso”!

classic sexploitation movies

This is a classic cult film that you can read more about here:

https://johnrieber.com/2012/06/06/psycho-go-go-dancers-delinquent-schoolgirls-and-candy-snatchers-more-70s-grindhouse/

But now, back to “Your Vice Is A Locked Room!”

First, here is an international trailer, but don’t worry: it’s all scenes and images from the film with a classic 70’s giallo soundtrack!

Your-Vice_english-poster

Well, that poster doesn’t leave much to the imagination, does it?

Here’s a brief synopsis: Oliviero is an abrasive drunk who amuses himself by holding drunken orgies at his grand country manor – and no surprise, his wife, played by Actress Anita Strindberg, doesn’t like it much!

Anita Strindberg Vice movie

Soon, a series of murders rocks Oliviero’s sordid world….and here’s a great fact thanks to IMDB: the title is a reference to Sergio Martino’s earlier giallo “”The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh”, in which the same phrase appears in a mysterious note apparently sent by a killer!

The Strange Vice Of Mrs. Wardh

So, are you getting an idea of just how entertaining and twisted this genre is? And believe me when I tell you – they are very entertaining!

Perhaps the most well-known Giallo Director is the legendary Dario Argento:

classic exploitation films

Argento’s masterpiece is “Suspiria” starring Jessica Harper, best known for her starring role in Brian DePalma’s “Phantom Of The Paradise”…but Argeno also made such great thriller as “Tenebrae”-

tenebrae

You can read all about his great movies by clicking on my story here:

https://johnrieber.com/2016/01/29/dario-argentos-bloody-masterpiece-tenebrae-cult-giallo-goes-blu/

Some very well known movie stars appeared in these films – perhaps none more beautiful than “Bond Girl” Claudine Auger:

James Bond Claudine Auger

Aside from starring alongside Sean Connery in “Thunderbolt”, she starred in a classic “giallo” as well…see it here:

https://johnrieber.com/2015/12/18/sexiest-bond-girl-ever-sex-kitten-claudine-auger-james-bond-and-giallo-horror/

One of the genre’s most controversial films was this classic – with an equally classic title:

lizard_in_womans_skin_poster

“A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin” ended up in court! Click here to find out why the Director almost ended up in prison!

https://johnrieber.com/2015/10/15/a-lizard-in-a-womans-skin-halloweens-controversial-giallo-on-trial-slithering-italian-sex-shockers/

As you can see, it’s a movie category with plenty of controversy…another great Director was Lucio Fulci, and yes, he had some wacky film titles too!

Don't Torture A Duckling sex shocker

Yes, the film “Don’t Torture A Duckling” is a classic Giallo shocker! Read more here:

https://johnrieber.com/2012/10/09/halloween-giallo-masters-agentos-animal-trilogy-fulcis-tortured-ducklings-italian-pulp-fiction/

And finally, here is a title that doesn’t beat around the bush:

strip-nude-for-your-killer-trailer-title

“Strip Nude For Your Killer” may sound like it’s pandering, and – well, it is! But it’s still a great mystery thriller, and you can read more here:

Are You In A “Sad Clown” Movie Mood?

No need on this 15th day of “Shocktober 2016” – I’ve got some of the most surreal yet entertaining horror films to share!

Fascination shocktober 2016 movie

Time To Be “Fascianted” By Director Jean Rollin!

If you’ve never heard of French Director Jean Rollin, you have missed out on some very atmospheric, haunting, nudity and blood-filled – yet somewhat slow-moving – European art-film horror!

Fascination

Meet Jean Rollin!

Jean Rollin was a French film director, actor, and novelist – best known for his films in the “fantastique” genre, as they say in France. He specialized in atmospheric horror of the 70’s – when relaxed censorship rules in cinema allowed Directors to push the envelope!

Jean Rollin Director

Jean-Rollin

Jean Rollin’s are very interesting to watch: moody, atmospheric and did I mention that his films were filled with BLOOD!

The Living Dead Girl

Jean Rollin’s Cult “Artsploitation” Is “Redeemed”!

Thanks to the terrific “Redemption” series of releases – from the “Redemption Films” group – these movies are now available again – and gives each film a newly remastered look, plus tons of extras like documentaries, audio commentaries and trailers – a terrific job.

Requiem For A Vampire

Requiem For A Vampire

Here is an early classic: on the run from a reform school, two young women commit crimes dressed as clowns.

cult 70's movies

Yes, they commit crimes dressed as clowns. How can you argue with that? Here is the clown-filled trailer:

Of course, the two “fleeing female clowns” seek refuge in a haunted castle, and end up trapped with no escape!

requiem for a vampire

Because, as happens too often, this haunted castle is ruled by a hoard of sexy, blood-crazed vampires and their leader, an evil immortal creature who is the last of his kind.

requiem for a vampire

Another of Rollins films is this classic:

Fascination!

Jean Rollin Fascination

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, “FASCINATION” follows a swaggering thief who hides out in a lavish chateau, holding the female occupants at gunpoint.

Jean Rollin Fascination

naked sex movies

You can sense a trend here: Rollin’s films usually involve women who are kidnapped or held against their will – and who wreck revenge against their abductors – usually men. And they always end up in a deserted castle.

fascination

Women With A Thirst For Blood!

When night falls, the “Fascination” captor realizes that these two maids are not only deadlier than he imagined, but are gatekeepers to a ring of women with a thirst for blood.

Once again, the film is filled with hynotic imagery like this:

Fascination

And what I think is his most dynamic image ever captured in one of his films – the blonde on the bridge with the sickle…

fascination

This action sequence, while fairly slow moving – it is, as you know, Jean Rollin – this sequence is beautifully done and hypnotic…

You must go out and buy this blu-ray to see the entire sequence, the movie as a whole, and all of the terrific extras! Then, you have to see THIS:

Director Jean Rollin died in 2010, but all of these releases have extensive material with him, as he actively participated in these great remasters. He introduces some of the films, takes part in commentaries, and discusses his work with passion and pride.

Time to celebrate day #16 of “Shocktober 2016” – a monthlong look at 31 of the best horror films – so why not take a ride with THIS GUY?

shocktober-2016-terror-train

Join Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis On The “Terror Train!”

“Terror Train” is a terrific, vicious slasher film from 1980, with some good scares and lots of blood…much of it on legendary Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis!

Jamie Lee Curtis scream queen

After the phenomenal success of “Halloween” in 1978, Curtis found herself starring in a number of slasher films, and quickly earned the title of reigning “Scream Queen”! Some films weren’t that good, but this one delivered the scares!

terror-train-1980-everett

The plot of “Terror Train” is brilliant in its simplicity: A masked killer seeks revenge against six college kids who were responsible for a prank gone wrong three years earlier – and lucky for the killer – the kids are throwing a large New Year’s Eve costume party aboard a moving train!

terror-train horror movie

This film is helped greatly by a truly creepy looking killer, and an ongoing sense of dread throughout. Check out the trailer:

terror-train

According to the great movie website IMDB, Jamie Lee Curtis once said of her character in this film:

“There are certain things a heroine in a thriller has to be. She has to be vulnerable, so that the audience identifies with her and is rooting for her. But she also has to have an enormous inner strength to overcome the evil, or terror, that is pursuing her. I play the same kind of character as I did in other films. But Alana – the girl I play – is stronger and more defined”.

scream queen jamie lee curtis

Bravo to Jamie Lee Curtis for finding more depth of character, even in straightforward horror films!

Shocktober Goes Nordic!

On our seventeenth day of “Shocktober”, time to head overseas for some incredibly imaginative horror!

best-halloween-horror-firlms-thale

If you are a cult film lover, you can’t help but admire when a film maker creates a unique vision – especially on a low low budget.

Here’s a very imaginative horror film that was made for almost nothing!

Check out the creepy trailer for this horror film from Norway – “Thale”:

thale dvd web

This Norwegian horror film finds a way to be very imaginative on almost no budget. Here is the plot, courtesy of IMDB:

Norwegian folklore turns out to be real when Leo and Elvis encounter “Thale” in a basement. A regular cleaning job turns into a struggle for survival, while they’re trying to figure out what or who “Thale” is.

horror films

10K Horror!

Reports say that “Thale” was shot on a budget of just $10,000! And here is one reason why: Director Aleksander L. Nordaas was also the film’s writer, co-producer, cinematographer, editor, and set designer! He also built the sets and shot most of the film in his father’s basement!

thale poster

The film’s reviews were mixed, but on the fourth ay of Shocktober, I want to celebrate the ingenuity and creative drive that was behind “Thale”..a real labor of love, and worth supporting for that reason…and for a bonus, here is another great Shocktober treat for you:

the-trollhunter

Meet “The Troll Hunter!”

This Norwegian film is also based on a fairy tale – the story of the monstrous trolls that live in Norway’s wilderness – and it’s the season to get wild! Check out the trailer:

These films are now available on DVD and blu-ray, so you can check out these two imaginative Nordic horror films in the privacy of your own home – celebrate Shocktober with a tail!

Spend The Night With Count Dracula!

Don’t wait, you can win a night at Vlad’s place! Yes, Dracula’s castle – the real life home to Vlad the Impaler, will have overnight guests this Halloween, the first time since 1948 that anyone has slept in the Transylvanian fortress!

inside-draculas-castle

According to the Associated Press:

“The site’s actual name is Bran Castle, and two people will get to sleep there Oct. 31 thanks to a promotion by Airbnb. The guests will be wined and dined, then left alone to lie down in red velvet-trimmed coffins just as Dracula did in the Bram Stoker horror novel that popularized the legend.

The castle is famous for its connection to Vlad the Impaler, a real-life prince who stayed there in the 15th century and had a cruel habit of using stakes to impale his victims. Vlad inspired Stoker’s story of Count Dracula.”

countess_dracula_horror

Countess Dracula!

Here is an example of a modern take on a classic tale, and all ready of you to view on this 18th day of Shocktober!

Like all vintage Hammer horror, the plot is simple but effective: In medieval Europe aging Countess Elisabeth rules harshly with the help of lover Captain Dobi. Hammer scored big with sex kitten Ingrid Pitt, who was not only a great actress but a great beauty as well!

sex kitten ingrid pitt

So an evil Countess – how to make it erotic? Easy! The Countess realizes that washing in the blood of young girls makes her young again!

nude Ingrid Pitt movies

“Washing In The Blood Of Young Girls” Indeed!

“Erotic horror” was Hammer’s attempt to stay relevant, and “Countess Dracula” and was a big hit that offered up lots of nudity and gore! All of this led to what many consider to be Hammer’s greatest achievement:So enter to spend the night in Dracula’s castle, enjoy some “Countess Dracula”, and see all of my first ten films of Shocktober by clicking here:

“Shocktober” Day #19 “Scares Jessica To Death!” Eerie Psychological Horror!

lets-scare-jessica-to-death-shocktober-2016

Have you ever gone swimming – only to find someone dead coming out of the water? Well, it’s Shocktober, so anything is possible!

Shocktober 2016 Wants To Scare Jessica To Death!”

How can you not love a horror movie with this tagline:

“Something is after Jessica. Something very cold, very wet…and very dead.”

Shocktober day #19 wants to introduce you to an obscure cult chiller from the early 70’s – psychological horror that will unnerve you!

First, check out this trailer:

Here’s an obscure movie worth finding! A recently institutionalized woman has bizarre experiences after moving into a supposedly haunted country farmhouse and fears she may be losing her sanity once again.

“Let’s Scare Jessica To Death” stands as one of the most subtle, yet truly scary films ever made. It just gets under your skin, despite a sensational title that suggests one of those “let’s do something to get her inheritance” contrived plots.

It is a masterful example of believable horror that has all the haunting lyricism needed to keep its motor going and draw the audience into Jessica’s surreal nightmares.

zohra-lampert-lets-scare-jessica-to-death

Zohra Lampert’s performance is superb and one of the most realistic portrayals of mental instability we have in the genre. Does it all really happen or is it in Jessica’s mind? In the end, she still doesn’t know and neither do we. Simply put, that is the triumph and beauty of this wonderful thriller.

lets-scare-jessica-to-death-1971-00-07-25

The Overlook Film Encyclopedia calls Let’s Scare Jessica To Death a “poetic and persuasive film” that “borrows from both the gothic and post-Night of the Living Dead traditions to depict the death of the love generation as a group of dropouts who find rural America less than accommodating.”

lets-scare-jessica-to-death-07

Is Jessica going crazy again? Is something in the lake? And is it coming after her? The mystery unfolds in a creepy, psychologically horrific way…

lets_scare_jessica_to_death-shocktober-halloween-2016

This is a very effective little horror movie – that is more than anything a look into the madness that envelopes a woman and just won’t let go…unless everything happening to her is real…this is a very little-known film, but worth finding!

Time To Celebrate The Bloody Fun Of “Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers!”

Yes, the title should tell you how “tongue in bloody cheek” this film is, but that’s what makes it a classic! First, check out this vintage movie trailer – oh, be warned that it is full of sex, nudity and blood – everything that makes Halloween great!

hollywood-chainsaw-hookers

Here is the film’s plot, courtesy of the great website “DVD Drive-in”:

“On the hunt for runaway Oxnard teenager Samantha, Los Angeles private detective Jack Chandler stumbles across an LAPD investigation into a series of chainsaw serial killings when thinks homicide detective Harrison’s “Cuisinart Queen” suspect – caught “making Chicken McNuggets with a chainsaw” – might be the missing girl!”

“Chicken McNuggets With A Chainsaw”!

First of all, bravo to the modern scream queen Linnea Quigley, who gives a terrific performance in the film! The late 80’s were a delirious time for low-budget filmmaking…from “Re-Animator” to “Chainsaw Hookers”, movies were trying to keep the spirit of the drive-in alive – just bloodier, sexier and with a knowing wink to the audience!

Director Fred Olen Ray had already directed a few movies prior to “HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS” – but according to DVD Drive-In, “Hookers” was filmed in five days!

Movietime

Greg Kenner’s “MovieTime” Moment!

DVD Drive-In also reports there is a great “extra” on the blu-ray release: a vintage “MovieTime Hollywood Premiere” (3:53) in which later Oscar-nominated actor Greg Kinnear pays his dues condescendingly covering the film’s premiere interviewing Quigley, Wildsmith, Camp Video’s Jim Goff, Sybil Danning (who is “always interested in a seeing a good documentary”), and cabaret act “Les Stevens and the Lovely Carol”.

As one of the folks who worked at MovieTime in the day, this is a great piece of nostalgia!

Meet The Bloody Directing Twins!

As the New York Times said: “Lots of siblings make movies. The brothers Coen (“No Country for Old Men”) are Oscar winners. Andy and Lana Wachowski (“Cloud Atlas”) are a prominent brother-sister team. But sister directors? And not just sisters, but identical twins?”

The Soska Sisters

You Mean There Are Horror Directing TWINS?

The answer is: YES! Meet Jen and Sylvia Soska, the identical twins who wrote and directed the horror film “American Mary!”

The story follows medical student Mary Mason, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called ‘freakish’ clientele.

OK everyone, do we smell a twisted, scapel-wielding horror film in the making here?

“American Mary” is on demand and home video, and it really delivers the creepy horror you want this month. As their website proudly claims:

“The Soska sisters have always loved film. Since childhood, they were heavily involved in acting. Above all, they had a special place in their twisted little hearts for horror.”

And how can you argue that on this Shocktober 2016?

The Wacky World Of Cult Movies!

Thanks to the great website IMDB, we have some fun “Death Bed” trivia!

Director George Barry’s inspiration for “Death Bed” came in a dream, which explains the film’s bizarre surreal feel…

cult horror movies

A Cult Legend Is Born – Or Bedded!

Until its official DVD release in 2003, “Death Bed” had been circulated via pirated bootlegs, and unbeknown to George Barry, the film had gained an underground fan base. VHS helped keep the mystique alive…

Director Barry said he discovered people discussing it on the internet one evening and decided to put an official video release of the film into works.

Patton Oswalt’s Obsession!

Comedian Patton Oswalt mentions the movie on his 2007 CD “Werewolves and Lollipops”, where he does a stand-up routine on it (mistakenly referring to it as “Death Bed: The Bed That Eats People”). He even specifically tells people to look up the movie on the IMDb to verify that he wasn’t joking about its existence! Here is that rant:

Shocktober Day #23 Comes With Many Bloody Names!

I love this film – I love sharing it on this day #23 of Shocktober – it’s a perfect bloody thriller for Halloween – and I love that it has THREE different titles! Check out these three posters for one single film:

Haute Tension / High Tension / Switchblade Romance!

Yes, it’s a great film with a split personality, thanks to multiple title changes for the US market!

The very bloody red poster for the rest of the world was changed for the US, and the title was changed as well…but no matter what you call it, this is one scary thriller! Check out the trailer!

shocking-horror-high-tension

The bloody horror film was originally rated NC-17 in the U.S. for strong graphic violence, but a few graphic shots were cut from the final version of the U.S. release to get it down to the R rating. However, the original cut (referred to as an unrated version) is available on Blu-ray and DVD – and you want to see this one uncut!

best-halloween-shockers-xtension

Of course, this French language film doesn’t begin so bloody…it all starts out so nice…Alexia travels with her friend Marie to spend a couple of days with her family in their farm in the country. They arrive late and they are welcomed by Alexia’s father.

Late in the night, a sadistic and sick killer breaks into the farmhouse, slaughters Alexia’s family–including their dog–and kidnaps Alexia. Marie hides from the criminal and tries to help the hysterical and frightened Alexia, chase the maniac, and disclose his identity in the end.

switchblade-romance-shocktober-2016

That’s right, Marie trails the killer and his conquest, trying to find the best time to save her best friend from the maniac…

high-tension-aka-switchblade-romance-di-01

That’s all you need to know…this is a bloody, twisted thriller that has a lot of great scares and unrelenting suspense!

[repeated line]
Marie: I won’t let anyone come between us any more.

Director Alexandre Aja and screenwriter Grégory Levasseur are childhood friends and made this film as a homage to the old-school horror films of the 70’s and 80’s that the two would watch together growing up.

shocking-horror-high-tension

Here is some great bloody trivia:

The camera used during the car-attack scene got so much fake blood on it during shooting that when it was being used on another film later on fake blood oozed from it during the focusing of a shot. How can you miss a movie that has THAT going for it!

British Director Ben Wheatley got his start doing commercials and music videos, then made several acclaimed viral videos for the web. That led to him getting the opportunity to direct features. He is a bold new talent emerging from the UK, with a distinctive style, and a twisted sense of humor!

Director Ben Wheatley

Let’s look at his first three films quickly – all are largely overlooked here in the US, but were critical hits in England: In May 2009 he directed the feature film “Down Terrace” in eight days; it won the Next Wave prize at Fantastic Fest in Austin and Best UK Feature at Raindance in London.

Here’s the trailer:

down-terrace-UK-poster

The plot is very straightforward: A crime family looks to unmask the police informant in their midst who threatens to take down their business. It’s to Wheatley’s credit that he created a critically-acclaimed film with no time or money…

Next up is a very dark and twisted tale of revenge, murder and madness!

Kill List

“I fucking hate dirty soap.”

Nearly a year after a botched job, a hit man takes a new assignment with the promise of a big payoff for three killings. What starts off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness.

best new thrillers

This film was released “unrated” for a reason – it’s a violent, dark and twisted thriller that doesn’t pull a punch!

It is also a horror movie of incredible intensity – see more about the film here:

And speaking of not pulling punches:

best british thrillers

His next movie was a perverse black comedy about two lovers who travel the British countryside, killing anyone who gets in their way…as you can see by the trailer, it’s a British “Badlands meets Natural Born Killers!”

All of this led to his next film = a low budget, black-and-white meditation on horror:

“Shocktober” Day #25 Slithers Like A “Lizard In A Woman’s Skin!” Shocking Halloween Horror!

A Lizard in a woman's skin blu-ray

A Bloody “Giallo” For Shocktober 2016!

Yes, it’s time to celebrate Italy’s lurid “giallo” genre once again, as “Shocktober” day #25 slithers into Italy!

Some of the most inventive thrillers ever made came from Italy, during a time when the “giallo” film was at its height – welcome to the bloody world of the Italian sex shocker!

classic giallo films

Let’s begin with a film that was so controversial it landed the Director in court, facing prison time! It’s all because of this:

“In the annals of the abnormal there is no more erotic nightmare than the strange lusts of…

A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin!”

lizard_in_womans_skin_poster

One of the most legendary Italian sex shockers is also one of the most controversial! Here is the plot: Florinda Bolkan plays the daughter of a prominant English politician who keeps having recurring “nightmares” in which she makes love to a bisexual nympho who lives downstairs and conducts all-night LSD orgies!

great giallo movies

That’s Right: ALL-NIGHT LSD ORGIES!

Anyone who has nightmares involving a bisexual nymph is just looking for trouble! FYI, the film was released in the US as “Schizoid”, which she certainly was! When the nocturnal wet dreams become murderous, the neighbor turns up dead, and Florinda is the main suspect. Did she actually commit the murder she dreamt about?

best giallo films

And Who Is This “Giallo?”

“Giallo” is a 20th-century Italian genre of literature and film. In Italy, the term denotes thrillers, typically of the crime fiction, mystery, and horror categories. “Giallo” refers to a style of murder mystery film which includes lots of horror, eroticism and sex! Here is what one of the books looks like:

Giallo Book

As you can see, it’s a lurid “come-on” to the reader, or in this case, to the moviegoer…and “Lizard In A Woman’s Skin” is a perfect fit as well, as it’s a sex shocker with a title as lurid as the style of filmmaking…

Lizard in a Woman's skin classic giallo

The Master! Director Lucio Fulci!

The Director of the movie was Lucio Fulci, one of Italy’s great horror filmmakers.

Among his films was this classic of the genre:

Don't Torture A Duckling sex shocker

The Director was such a master of shock that a judge threatened to throw him in jail!

controversail lizards skin dog scene

One such shocking scene in “Lizard’s Skin” involves a room full of disemboweled dogs. Director Fulci was nearly sent to prison because it was believed that the dogs were real and Fulci had allowed animal cruelty on the film! Crew members had to testify in court that the “dogs” were indeed fake and no animals had ever been harmed. Special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi even presented the dog props in court to convince the jury. This was the first time that an effects artist had to testify in court that their work was fake!

lizard_in_a_woman's skin

Thanks to the great movie company Mondo Macabro, a great new blu-ray release is here!

“The Thing” Shocks Halloween Horror Day #26! “Man Is The Warmest Place To Hide!”

“Man Is The Warmest Place To Hide.”

With those words, Shocktober day #26 celebrates one of the greatest horror films ever: John Carpenter’s classic “The Thing!”

shocktober-the-thing-halloween-movie

This iconic image reminds me of what a classic, creepy and shocking film this is – Director John Carpenter is allredy on my life for “Shocktober” – his “Halloween” is one of horror’s greatest achievements as well.

Let’s begin with the trailer for this classic film:

thething

Scientists are housed in Antartica. It’s the first week of winter in 1982. An American Research Base is greeted by an alien force, which is able to assimilate by hiding inside anything it touches.

cast-of-the-thing-horror-films

Kurt Russell stars in the film, along with a number of great character Actors. Remember that Russell had just done “Escape From New York” with Carpenter.

kurt-russell-the-thing

As it becomes clear that something is very, very wrong – the crew begin to turn on each other, fearful that at any moment someone could end up doing this!

the-thing3

It’s up to the members to stay alive, and uncover who has become “the Thing.” As the great tagline says:

“Man Is The Warmest Place To Hide.”

There are many types of horror – the slow, creeping dread that settles over a film – and those movies that use big shocks and special effects….”The Thing” is a perfect combination of both – unsetttling dread as dark as the Antartic winter, and shocking special effects unlike any seen before – like this scene, where a man’s head becomes a spider!

best-horror-film-effects

According to IMDB, John Carpenter said that Wilford Brimley was the only cast member not initially grossed out by the autopsy scene where they used real animal organs!

the-thing-horror-special-effects

Brimley had been a real-life cowboy and hunter, so gutting animals and removing organs was a normal experience for him!

shocktober-the-thing-halloween-movie

“The Thing” wasn’t a box office success when released in 1982 – it was, perhaps, too dark and unsettling – but its stature over the years has grown, and it is now considered a modern horror classic, and has become part of the culture in Antarctica. It is a long standing tradition in all British Antarctic research stations to watch the movie as part of their Midwinter feast and celebration held every June 21!

best-halloween-horror-the-thing

As I said, Director John Carpenter is already on my “Shocktober” list for another of the greatest horror films ever made:

What a classic! It also introduced America to the iconic “scream queen”, Jamie Lee Curtis – see more here:

“Halloween” is just one of the many films I have profiled this Halloween season – like this one, a modern horror classic:

“The Shining” Lights Up Shocktober Day #27! “Here’s JOHNNY!” Kubrick’s Creepy Masterpiece!

jack-nicholson-the-shining

You all remember crazy Jack Nicholson…uttering horror’s most iconic line:

Heeere’s Johnny!

On this 27th day of “Shocktober 2016”, let’s look at one of the most influential horror films of all time, from one of the world’s greatest filmmakers – need proof?

2001_a_space_odyssey_wallpaper

a clockwork orange x-rated

4.2.7

4.2.7

Legendary Director Stanley Kubrick had already blown our minds with “Dr. Strangelove”, “Lolita”, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, and the futuristic horror of “A Clockwork Orange”…now he wanted us to spend a little time with his friend Jack Nicholson…he chose one of Stephen King’s greatest novels to do just that…

the-shining

“Some places are like people: some shine and some don’t.”

The plot of “The Shining” is simple: A man, his son and wife become the winter caretakers of an isolated hotel. Six months of quiet desolation, a place for Danny to explore…

the-shining-horror-2016

Unfortunately, little Danny sees disturbing visions of the hotel’s past – using a telepathic gift known as “The Shining”. Example? How about the twins he sees in the hallway…

stanley_kubrick-the_shining

And then of course, Danny sees more…as the horrific images continue…and there is no one to confide in…

The father, played with intense glee by Jack Nicholson, is working on a writing project when he slowly slips into insanity as a result of cabin fever – oh, and the advice he gets from former Hotel guests. After being convinced by a waiter’s ghost to “correct” the family, Jack goes completely insane.

best-halloween-horror-the-shining

To announce “The Shining”, Warner Brothers released a teaser trailer that had just one shot – a wide shot of an elevator in a hotel lobby – but what happened next shocked the world:

Stanley Kubrick, known for his compulsiveness and numerous retakes, got the shot of blood pouring from the elevators in only three takes. That said, the shot took nine days to set up; every time the doors opened and the blood poured out, Kubrick would say, “It doesn’t look like blood.”

the-shining-trivia

Shelley Duvall stars as Jack’s wife, who wants nothing more than to protect their child from evil…and the more time she spends with her husband, the less sure she is of him:

Wendy Torrance: [crying] Stay away from me.
Jack Torrance: Why?
Wendy Torrance: I just wanna go back to my room!
Jack Torrance: Why?
Wendy Torrance: Well, I’m very confused, and I just need time to think things over!
Jack Torrance: You’ve had your whole FUCKING LIFE to think things over, what good’s a few minutes more gonna do you now?
Wendy Torrance: Please! Don’t hurt me!
Jack Torrance: I’m not gonna hurt you.
Wendy Torrance: Stay away from me!
Jack Torrance: Wendy? Darling? Light, of my life. I’m not gonna hurt ya. You didn’t let me finish my sentence. I said, I’m not gonna hurt ya. I’m just going to bash your brains in.
[Wendy gasps]

behind-the-scenes-the-shining-trivia

Jack Torrance: Gonna bash ’em right the fuck in! ha ha ha
Wendy Torrance: Stay away from me! Don’t hurt me!
Jack Torrance: [sarcastically] I’m not gonna hurt ya…
Wendy Torrance: Stay away! Stop it!
Jack Torrance: Stop swingin’ the bat. Put the bat down, Wendy. Wendy? Give me the bat…

the_shining_-jack-frozen_1

Stanley Kubrick was a perfectionist, and according to IMDB, there is a great deal of confusion regarding the number of retakes of certain scenes. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the scene where Wendy is backing up the stairs swinging the baseball bat was shot 127 times, which is a record for the most takes of a single scene. However, both Steadicam operator Garrett Brown and assistant editor Gordon Stainforth say this is inaccurate – the scene was shot about 35-45 times. Brown does say however that the scene where Hallorann explains to Danny what shining is was shot 148 times, which is a world record.

the-shining-halloween-horror

Of course, when Jack finally snaps, he grabs a handy and ax and heads for the bathroom….this scene culminates in the classic movie line:

“Here’s Johnny!”

“Here’s Johnny!” was voted 36th best line of all time by Premiere in 2007.

the_shining_-jack-frozen_1

“The Shining” is a masterpiece, and a great scary movie…and has birthed a new documentary that delves into the film in a very unusual way…

room-237

Room 237

Imagine film buffs who are so obsessed with “The Shining” that they have created a number of amazing theories about what Kubrick was doing in the film! Here is the trailer for this documentary:

room_237-the-shining-horror-film

So what exactly is “Room 237”?

Here is how IMDB describes it:

“A subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery.”

the-shinning-conspiracy-theories

Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they’ll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out.”

Rodney Ascher’s debut in the field of documentary was originally intended as a short film but he was overwhelmed by the breadth of crackpot theories which center on the horror classic. The participants have tried to understand this work by film’s ultimate perfectionist by trusting that if it is on-screen, then Kubrick intended it to be seen and read closely!

Kubrick_-_Barry_Lyndon_candid

Among the “clues” that Kubrick has put in the film are that he helped fake the moon-landing!

Now 36 years old, “The Shining” continues to entertain audiences, and last year, Warner Brothers held an amazing reunion for the film!

Farewell Uwe Boll! “Blubberella” Director Retires! Goodbye To The Master Of Cinematic Disaster!

uwe-boll

Goodbye Uwe!

Uwe Boll, the legendary Director behind several video game-to-film adaptations – like “Alone in the Dark”, “Postal” and “BloodRayne” – has shocked the movie world by announcing that he’s retiring from filmmaking!

director-uwe-boll

Umm….that’s right, Boll left the Director’s chair with a one-fingered salute to the movie business!

uwe-boll-retires

Boll is a true renegade – a feisty filmmaker who has battled critics and fans over the years – for what many say are among the worst movies ever made.

And when I say “battled”:

director-uwe-boll-boxing

Yes, the Director actually challenged Critics to a boxing match to settle their differences, and ended up knocking out four of them! He’s a guy who likes to fight back, as evidenced by his last film:

rampage-president-down-movie

Rampage: President Down!

According to Metro News, Boll’s last film will be “Rampage: President Down”, with the director saying his politically-minded films just aren’t making an impact.

“Rampage 3 will be watched on Netflix, DVD or iTunes or whatever,” he said.

Check out the trailer:

Toronto’s Metro News also reports:

“Boll went so far as to say the “market is dead,” noting that “with streaming everywhere there is just a big wave of movies flooding around and you have no impact.” He also highlighted the drastic decline in DVD and Blu-ray sales over the past few years as “the real reason” he’s retiring, adding, “I just cannot afford to make movies.”

The director also addressed how he has been self-financing for over a decade now, saying “I never had people giving me money.” Last year Boll launched his third crowdfunding campaign, which failed to get the support he was seeking.”

director-uwe-boll-retires

The Human ATM!

The Toronto Metro goes on to report that the Director was funding all his movies!

“I’ve been using my money since 2005 and if I hadn’t made the stupid video game based movies I would never have amalgamated the capital so I could say, ‘Let’s make the Darfur movie,'” he added. “I don’t need a Ferrari, I don’t need a yacht. I invested in my own movies and I lost money.”

Boll said he hopes more people will discover and watch his prior films, which he believes “made sense and said a point about things” and “deserve to be discussed bigger than they were.”

With that in mind, time to discover THIS Uwe Boll film:

bloodrayne

Bloodrayne!

Boll had a good run by adapting vieogames into awful films….check out the trailer:

Boll continued his streak with the horrific adaptation of “Alone In The Dark:”

alone-in-the-dark

Alone In The Dark

As you can see, Boll had movie stars in his films, and many of them were successful…check out the trailer:

Unfortunately, many Critics called these among the worst films of all time.

If you really want to see the full scope of Uwe Boll’s work, then this is the film you must see:

blubberella-dvd

Blubberella!

Um….look at the trailer:

blubberella-uwe-boll

Well then….

As you can see, Boll is an aggressive, “in your face” Filmmaker who isn’t afraid to offend. So, are his films as bad as many have said?

Sure, but he directed dozens of movies, some of which got some good reviews, and he just kept rolling film on dozens of films, so let’s give him credit.

His independent filmmaking will be missed!

We should celebrate those renegade moviemakers who bring their passion projects to life – like this!

fleshpot on 42nd street

The Legendary Andy Milligan!

Sure, this Director was behind the classic “Fleshpot On 42nd Street” – and this classic as well:

Was Milligan the worst film Director of all time? Well, the maker of this film would choose to differ:

Manos poster
