We’ve seen “sharknadoes”, now there are sharks that come from the swamps of Arkansas to feed on beautiful girls!

Time To Dive Into The “Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre”!

The trailer says it all:

It happens all the time in Arkansas: a “fracking” accident rips apart the earth’s crust, and out pour prehistoric sharks – who naturally attack a group of beautiful young women who happen to be staying in a remote cabin!

I have read reviews that point out this is “nudity free”, meaning it’s a classic “B” movie designed to air on cable channels all across your dial for years to come…Dominique Swain and Traci Lords star in the film, which doesn’t demand anything more than for you to sit back and watch the “sharks fly”!

Director Jim Wynorski made classic “B” movies like “SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE 2” and “BIG BAD MAMA 2.” If anyone can make this kind of campy horror entertaining, it’s this guy…however, if you REALLY want a “women’s prison” film, then you should try this one…

If your “cult cinema” tastes run a bit more lurid, then you will find these “women in prison” more to your liking:

“Paul McCartney and John Lennon Have A Song For You…Please Hold.”

Can you imagine getting THAT call? Well, it happened a number of times in the 60’s and 70’s – John Lennon and Paul McCartney routinely wrote songs The Beatles gave away to others!

When A “Beatles” Song ISN’T A Beatles Song!

Wikipedia has an entire entry about songs that were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for other Artists..here is how they categorized them:

1 – Recordings by the Beatles of Lennon–McCartney songs that the group ultimately decided not to release.
2 – Lennon–McCartney songs that the Beatles deemed unsuitable for the group at the outset and did not even attempt to record themselves.
3 – Songs that had been intentionally written for other artists.

“The Songs Lennon and McCartney Gave Away!”

Because EVERYTHING The Fab Four has done has been extensively documented, these songs exist for fans to enjoy.

This compilation album containing the original artist recordings of songs composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney was released in the UK in 1979! Here is a look at the lineup:

The first song on the compilation album is actually the last song that was given to others. “I’m the Greatest” was recorded by Ringo Starr for his “Ringo” album – and written specifically for him by John Lennon in 1973 – the rest of these songs were released as singles during the active Beatles years in the 1960s.

Ringo’s Classic “Ringo!”

All of the other Beatles gave Ringo a song for his classic solo album, which was a huge smash thanks to songs like “Photograph”.

Paul and George also gave songs to Ringo, but this Lennon tune is the best – and John included his version of it on his Lennon box set, playfully rehearsing the song to the others in the studio:

One of the greatest songs written for others was thanks to Paul McCartney, and it also had a Ringo connection!

Ringo’s Hilarious Movie! The “Come And Get It” Theme!

Paul also wrote a classic song for Ringo, except in this case, it was the theme song for Ringo’s movie “The Magic Christian.”

You must check out this movie…the theme song was a big hit for Badfinger, who recorded on The Beatles’ Apple label. Here is Paul’s demo of the song:

“If you want it, here it is
Come and get it m-m-m!
Make your mind up fast

If you want it anytime I can give it
But you better hurry ’cause it may not last”

McCartney recorded a solo demo of the song on July 24, 1969, when he arrived early for an Abbey Road session. He sang the double-tracked lead vocal and played all the instruments: he sang and played piano on the first take, sang again and played maracas on the first overdub, drums came third and bass guitar was added last. It took less than an hour to finish. It was officially released in 1996 on “The Beatles Anthology 3” and issued under The Beatles’ name, even though McCartney did the entire song by himself…

“SgtPepperChannel” on youtube posted this – bravo! As you can see, John and Paul did a ton of music for others, as they were amazingly prolific….

“It’s For You!”

You heard a snipped of this in the montage – “It’s for You” was written by John and Paul for popular singer Cilla Black – and it was a UK Top Ten hit in 1964.

Here she is performing the show on UK TV, with a cameo appearance by Paul and John at the end:

Singer Cilla Black recorded the song at Abbey Road Studios in July 1964, with George Martin producing the session. Can you imagine the creatively that was going on at the time?

Cilla Black recalled the recording session years later:

“That was some session…John and Paul joined me and George Martin. We made one track and then everyone had a go at suggesting how they thought it should be recorded. George said it should be one way, John and Paul another and I just added my suggestions while they were thinking of what else they could do with the composition.”

Macca’s “Penina!”

In the late 60’s, Paul was very prolific, and he wrote the song “Penina” at the Hotel Penina in December 1968, when he was vacationing in the Portuguese region of the Algarve.

George Writes With Eric Clapton!

The Beatles were so prolific as a group that they had more than enough hits of their own – and George got into the action as well!

George wrote “Badge” with Eric Clapton for his group Cream. The song was originally an untitled track. According to wikipedia:

“during the production transfer for the album Goodbye, the original music sheet was used to produce the liner notes and track listing. The only discernible word on the page was “bridge” (indicating the song’s bridge section). Due to Harrison’s handwriting, however, Clapton misread it as “badge” — and the song was titled soon thereafter.”

Now back to that “bad handwriting” story – Harrison remembered the story differently:

“I helped Eric write “Badge” you know. Each of them had to come up with a song for that Goodbye Cream album and Eric didn’t have his written. We were working across from each other and I was writing the lyrics down and we came to the middle part so I wrote ‘Bridge.’ Eric read it upside down and cracked up laughing– ‘What’s BADGE?’ he said. After that, Ringo [Starr] walked in drunk and gave us that line about the swans living in the park.”

So there you have it, a drunk Ringo contributed as well! The Beatles were amazingly prolific, and left us with an unbelievable catalog of music to love.

However, their songs were sometimes used in some VERY questionable ways – like these two films!

James Gunn And The Origin Of “Dolphinman!”

Yes, “Guardians Of The Galaxy” Director James Gunn created the iconic Troma character “Dolphinman” – with my wife, Alex Duda!

The Origin Of A Superhero!

Why am I doing an “origin” story? I will explain in a moment. But first, I am ready to reveal “the man under the mask” – the first greg Actor to play this iconic movie character.

Nobody knew the amazing Actor behind this character, until now – because the first Actor to ever portray Dolphinman was none other than:

Steve Kmetko!

That’s right, Entertainment Journalist and E! News Host Steve Kmetko was the FIRST DOLPHINMAN!

Here’s how it happened: when Alex and I produced E!’s Cannes film festival coverage, we always shot special segments with Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman and his great Tromatic team:

James Gunn wrote some of the classic Troma films like “Tromeo & Juliet”, and was part of the team in Cannes getting attention for Troma’s slate of movies.

One year, my wife Alex and James created a new super hero for Troma – “Dolphinman” – it showed Lloyd neglecting his other Troma characters…there is more to the story to come, but why am I telling you all of this? Because “Dolphinman” is back!

“Lila” is a seemingly good-natured go-go dancer who strips at a seedy topless bar on the Sunset Strip. Don’t believe me? Here are the opening credits, with the least sexy “go go” dancing you’ve ever seen!

I love the lyrics to the song as they sing:

Why? Because they released the film with that title as well!

Clint Eastwood had a string of big action hits in the 70’s, but this is my favorite:

Thunderbolt And Lightfoot!

This 1974 action film is a classic, criminally overlooked Clint Eastwood heist movie – Jeff Bridges was Oscar-nominated for his role here – and it is directed by Michael Cimino, who would go on next to do the Oscar-winning best picture of 1978, “The Deer Hunter!”

Jeff Bridges Flirts With Oscar!

That’s right, Jeff Bridges was Oscar-nominated for this film, and he is terrific as always! Clint Eastwood plays a bank robber par excellence with a flair for explosives who is being hunted by his former partners, who think he has their loot from their last job.

Bridges is his eager apprentice and sidekick, who helps him escape; when Eastwood finally makes peace with his hunters, Bridges convinces them to try a daring robbery–but things inevitably go awry.

Linda Blair Makes Heads Spin Again!

She may be best known for one of the most shocking scenes in movie history – the moment in the classic horror film “The Exorcist” when the little girl Regan “turns” around to address someone – without moving her body!

Yes, it’s just one of many stunning images from this classic film – so what could Actress Linda Blair do to “out do” it?

Well, when she grew up, she did THIS!

Hello, Linda!

Time to look at one of the more controversial moves that Linda Blair made in her career – her decision to pose topless in the “Gentleman’s” magazine of that era, Oui!

I will refrain from showing any of the more explicit topless pictures, but I will share a link later in the story if you choose to get more info yourself…

First, let’s look at Linda Blair’s road to her provocative photo spread!

Linda Blair’s Breakthrough Movie!

Linda Blair has had a long and acclaimed career, but she got her start in the biggest way possible – by starring in “The Exorcist” when she was just thirteen years old. She was Oscar nominated and won a Golden Globe for her performance, which is one of the most shocking performances of all time…

In the more than forty years since it was released, “The Exorcist” has remained one of the most shocking films ever made….because of moments like this:

“Cue The Soup!”

The moment when Linda Blair unloads gallons of green liquid onto her guests is a legendary horror moment that never fails to shock…

Great “Exorcist” Trivia!

Here is some great trivia about the film:

The refrigerated bedroom set was cooled with four air conditioners and temperatures would plunge to around 30 to 40 below zero. It was so cold that perspiration would freeze on some of the cast and crew.

The air was saturated with moisture, resulting in a thin layer of snow once falling on the set before the crew arrived for filming!

Oh yeah, and then there is the “head turn” sequence! As you can see in this picture, Blair is holding a crucifix for all the wrong reasons…another scene that was so shocking that audience members fled the theaters when it was playing – this type of horror reaction just doesn’t happen any more!

And now, back to some more Linda:

Making Controversial Choices!

Linda Blair took many courageous chances when she was young – such as starring in the TV movie “Born Innocent” in 1974, portraying a 14-year old girl sentenced to a women’s prison!

The film’s most notorious scene involved the rape of Blair’s character in the prison’s communal showers by a girl gang – with a plunger handle! This was the first all-female rape scene aired on American television!

Blair had a run of cult 80’s films as well, including “Savage Streets” – where she played a vigilante seeking revenge for her sister’s brutal rape and friend’s murder!

As you can see, Blair had a provocative pose in the film’s poster, as the Actress was pushing boundaries in her career.

Perhaps the most surprising choice she made was this one:

Oui! Oui!

However, in 1982 the Actress showed her most “adult” side by appearing in a photo spread for Oui magazine!

The pictures show the Actress in various stages of undress, and it was only a year later that Blair showed up in an Italian Playboy pictorial as well!

Caroline Munro – from Vincent Price’s Dead Wife to 007’s Bond Girl!

Time to celebrate another 007 “Bond Girl”…while that sounds derogatory, this is a description that has been used since the series premiered in 1963…with this legendary “Bond Girl”:

Ursula Andress – Or “UNDRESS!” 007’s First “Bond Girl”! Honey Ryder Was 60’s Sex Kitten!

There are a number of unique Bond Girls as well, which leads us to Caroline Munro:

Munro got her start as a Vogue model when she was seventeen, and quickly began showing up in bit parts in films such as the 1967 James Bond spoof, “Casino Royale.” In the pic above, she is the third woman from the left…

Some don’t consider this James Bond spoof a real 007 film, but I say we celebrate Munro’s role…just as we did for this Bond Girl as well:

Now, back to Munro: after her small role in the Bond film, Caroline’s first big role was in 1971, opposite Horror legend Vincent Price in “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” – playing the deceased Mrs. Victoria Regina Phibes.

Here is what she said about working on the film – as a dead woman next to a living legend!

“The most challenging scenes involved lying in the coffin with Vincent. You see, I’m allergic to feathers and I was attired in this beautiful negligee – but it was covered with feathers! It took a great deal of willpower not to sneeze or sniffle. On occasion, I would simply have to sneeze and this would result in having to do another take.”

Now, back to Munro:

She reprised the role in the 1972 sequel as well, then went on to sign a deal with legendary British horror studio Hammer.

Munro starred alongside Christopher Lee in “Dracula AD 1972”, then went on to star in the classic “Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter”!

Munro was on a roll, showing up next in the Ray Harryhausen effects spectacular “The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad.”

As you can see, the camera LOVED Munro, and she never had an issue with her wardrobe being ill-fitting…

Munro’s “Real” Bond Film!

In 1977, Caroline got her biggest role ever when she became an official “Bond Girl” in “The Spy Who Loved Me.”

“Spy” was one of the best Bond films ever, with Roger Moore at the height of his popularity as 007. The film also introduced a classic bad guy, the late Richard Kiel as “Jaws.”

Of course, every “Bond girl” gets a chance to wear a bikini, and Munro was no different – but she also exuded a sense of fun and playfulness that made her one of the more memorable Bond actresses.

From 007 To Crazed “Maniac!”

The Bond film was Munro’s career highlight, and after that, while working regularly, the films weren’t quite as big. Some of Munro’s later movies include cult B-movies like “Starcrash” – and she literally lost her head in the cult horror classic “Maniac!”

Her roles dwindled over time, but Munro left behind a lot of cult classics to remember her by, and a ton of bikini photos as well!

“She Ruled The Swamp With A Blazing Gun And A Luscious Smile!”

One of the 70’s most promising Actresses starred in several classic cult films, but just as she was growing as an Actress, she died tragically – here is the story of Claudia Jennings…

Jennings gained fame when she was named Playboy’s Playmate of the Year for 1970. As many Playmates did, Jennings used that fame to get into film.

The Love Machine!

Jennings got her start in the camp cult film “The Love Machine”, based on the notorious novel by Jacqueline Susanne, who wrote “Valley Of The Dolls.”

“Robin Stone, an ambitious, sex driven TV news anchor catches the eye of Judith Austin, the wife of network executive Greg Austin. She pressures Greg into promoting him to a higher position and before long, he is running the network while Greg recovers from a massive coronary. Meanwhile, Robin dumps his model girlfriend Amanda and begins an affair with Judith!”

Pure campy trash. Jennings followed this with roles in “Unholy Rollers” and “Group Marriage” – yes, exactly the kind of films you’d expect to see a naked Playmate in!

Just a few years after the groundbreaking “Bob & Carol& Ted and & Alice”, Jennings starred in a sex romp that imagined a whole new way to get married! Check out the trailer for this camp classic:

Next up, Jennings headed to the country for some classic “hicksploitation!”

Early in the morning of October 3, 1979, Jennings died in a car accident when a van hit her while she was driving her Volkswagen Beetle convertible along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. She was only 29 years old…

It’s true, and I have the email to prove it!

I know, we’ve all had our “this is a sure-fire way to get rich” moment, but this email added just the right touch of hilarity – so I am sharing:

“In Vain To Another Man’s Favor!”

How can you not respond to such an emotional outburst? Here’s the paragraph that choked me up and raised my greed level.

The email was from, naturally, US Customs, and they need to inform me that they have a LOT of money to share with me…normally I never read these spams, but this one caught my attention – near the top of the note was this intriguing line:

“Mr.Thomas Allen is your Attorney and 53 years old and 4.3 inches tall, he is located at 0801 9th Avenue North California city. Mr. Thomas Allen. The Los Angeles Airport Customs said that if you the beneficiary has not comply under 24hrs that all your effort to receive your consignment trunk boxes will be in vain to another man’s favor.”

Yes, I am running the risk of having my consignment trunk boxes “in vain to another mans favor.” Even better, my Attorney is 53 years old and 4.3 inches tall!

That made me wonder: could he be a descendent of Weng Weng?

The Best Selling Pin-Up Of The 60’s!

This image, of Raquel in the animal skin bikini, was the best-selling pin-up poster of the 60’s, and turned her into an international sex kitten – a picture that was taken originally from the set of her first movie, the smash hit “One Million Years B.C.”

The movie was the perfect vehicle for Welch – a story of life in prehistoric times, when there was little dialogue and fewer clothes…

Narrator: This is a story of long, long ago; when the world was just beginning.

I LOVE when the trailer proclaims, “Introducing Raquel Welch, the amazing star discovery of this, or any year!” Check it out:

And it included such memorable dialogue between Raquel and her co-star:

Yes, this is dialogue from the movie. But it didn’t matter, as it catapulted Raquel to stardom, and she followed up with a wide variety of roles that showcased her beauty more than her acting ability…

And of course, sexy photo shoots like this kept her popular with the guys, so naturally she teamed up with one of the biggest male action stars of the 70’s…

Fuzz.

This is an action comedy from 1972. Police in Boston search for a mad bomber trying to extort money from the city. The cops in charge of finding this “mad bomber” are Burt Reynold, Raquel Welch and Tom Skerritt.

According to IMDB, Raquel Welch did not like Burt Reynolds because of unsavory comments he made while they were filming “100 Rifles” together. So, in this movie Welch insisted that she not have any direct scenes with Reynolds. The closest they get is during the interrogation. Even when in the same room they never have direct eye contact!

Raquel also starred in the 1971 western “Hannie Caulder”, and as you can see, there wasn’t much of a wardrobe budget for the film!

“The Last Of Sheila!”

The result is ruthless competition between several companies. Raquel showed up to look pretty and live up to the title…

Hey everyone, I want to share a great new artistic effort by Sasha Grey – here is the official announcement:

“GREYSCALE” is a new short format series that approaches art as poetic commentary along with visually stunning photography, hosted and created by Sasha Grey and directed by Mattia Venni Uberti. A far turn from traditional review and television documentaries, the episodes themselves becomes cinematic art. Our first pilot episode is a sample of what I hope the future can hold. Shot at MOCA’s permanent collection in Los Angeles, I take the viewer on a photographic and poetic journey. MOCA’s collection offers a wide range of artists, where as in the future we may chose to focus on a particular artist’s solo exhibition at a particular gallery in future episodes, or conversely, classic pieces at a variety of museums. This will provide for a different dialogue and reflection, creating an individual tone for each episode.

The 31st “Godzilla” Is Here!

Yes, the world’s greatest movie monster is back! For the 31st time, Japan cinemas has fans roaring in delight at the latest “Godzilla” film – first, check out the trailer!

“Godzilla” is an icon in Japan – so much so that one of the hotels actually put the beast on its roof – the hotel where my son Jeff stayed!

The Hotel Gracery, located in Shinjuku’s Kabuki-Cho district, put the monster on top of the Hotel’s reception floor, and inside, you could get a closeup look at the beast, which Alex and I jumped at the chance to do:

A Wall Of Godzilla!

Also inside the lobby was an exhibit that had T-shirts, DVD of earlier films, and a wall that had posters of all 31 films, classic movie posters like these:

The latest Godzilla looks muscular and brawn, with just enough “retro” look to pay homage to what makes these films so iconic: wild plots with a mix of great action and campy special effects…

This fun “Godzilla” exhibit had me interested in seeing the new film, which opens July 25th in Japan…

I also had some other fun in Tokyo as well…

This 1971 film starred Bruce Davison and Ernest Borgnine, and was a surprise hit! Check out the classic trailer:

“Willard” was based on the novel “The Ratman’s Notebooks”, and was a surprise box office hit in 1971! A young Bruce Davison stars as Willard, a shy boy who befriends a rat named Ben…

Ernest Borgnine Bets Against “Ben!”

Ernest Borgnine co-stars in “Willard”, and as you can see, it doesn’t end well for him. According to Borgnine’s autobiography, they offered the legendary character Actor a choice of a higher salary or a percentage of the box office. Borgnine chose to take the money right away – probably costing him plenty, because the movie was a surprise hit!

Michael Jackson’s Love Song To A Rat!

One of the most interesting aspects of the film is that the main rat, Ben, was the star of a sequel the very next year called “Ben” – and the theme song is sung by a young Michael Jackson…and it was nominated for best original song of 1972!

That’s right – “Ben” was oscar-nominated! And why not? After all, it’s not every movie that offers a loving tribute to a killer rat!

Ah, the happy days of grindhouse exploitation, when movie posters were full of double entendres and “hey now” one liners…one of the more popular genres was related to “Cheerleaders”…

Cult erotic film Actress Kristine Debell shook her Pom Poms in the cult 70’s film “Cheerleader’s Wild Weekend!” Seems like a perfect title, but it was also known under another name….”The Great American Girl Robbery!”

Takashi Miike is a highly prolific and controversial Japanese filmmaker – having directed over ninety theatrical, video, and television productions since 1991!

The films are shocking, daring, controversial, and in many cases, classics of cinema!

Ichi The Killer!

Mike first caught my eye with this ultra-violent story of a hired Assassin…it’s a great, gory thriller – check out the trailer:

This horror classic was recently listed as one of the top 100 horror films of all time…it’s a slow-building masterpiece of shock…check out the trailer:

These Birds Will “Shock” You!

I love movies. ALL KINDS OF MOVIES. Therefore, I LOVE “BIRDEMIC!”

Let me explain, in case you haven’t seen this movie. Someone made this. They are now officially a “film maker.” And You are not. So, credit must go where credit must go!

Have You Seen The Brilliant “Birdemic: Shock And Terror?”

“Vice” has a great mini-documentary from Evan Husney that looks at the making of this film…here is what you need to know:

In January 2009, software salesman James Nguyen traveled to the Sundance Film Festival to self-promote his low-budget independent horror film “Birdemic: Shock and Terror.”

When the film was rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, according to IMDB:

“James Nguyen promoted his film by putting banners, fake blood, and fake birds all over his van. He would drive around to advertise until it caught the attention of Severin Films, which then distributed this film – and cinema history was made!”

I am in the middle of a marathon of films by a visionary new Director, Ben Wheatley…and his second film just blew me away!

The Sign Of Horror!

WOW! I don’t have words to describe how amazing Ben Wheatley’s film “Kill List” is! It’s a British thriller that evolves into a horrific journey into the “heart of darkness.”

Here is the plot: you meet Jay and his wife Shel as they welcome their friend Gal and his new girlfriend for dinner. Over lots of drinking, you find out that Jay hasn’t worked for months…

I don’t want to share too much of the plot, but know that Jay and Gal have a “working” relationship that comes out in the course of the movie – in some very funny, dark, and horrifically violent ways!

There’s no other way to say it: “Kill List” will blow your mind! It’s a ROUGH ROUGH ROUGH movie in a couple of scenes, but it’s also a hypnotic fever dream that is darkly funny and human for a “hit man” film – in fact, it turns the genre completely on its head!

It’s just another amazing film from a visionary Director!

Meet Ben Wheatley!

If you don’t know this Director’s work, you are missing some terrific films.
In May 2009, he directed “Down Terrace” in eight days; it won the Next Wave prize at Fantastic Fest in Austin and Best UK Feature at Raindance in London.

“Kill List” Followed in 2010. I just watched it on Amazon Prime.

Wheatley’s third film was “Sightseers”, released in 2012. Wheatley’s fourth film was this haunting black-n-white psychological horror film:

“A Field in England” takes place entirely in a field – soldiers fighting a battle are trapped, and slowly go mad…here is the trailer:

Wheatley’s most successful film was released this year:

“High Rise” is adaptation of the J.G. Ballard novel, and Wheatley has a well known cast, including Tom Huddleston, Sienna Miller and Jeremy Irons.

This film is now out ondemand and I plan to watch it next!
